  let's take 12 * 12

  Write 12 as   10 + 2

  so now,  (10 + 2) *  (10 + 2)

  now multiply 10 * 10 = 100

           multiply 10 * 2  =  20  

           multiply 2 * 10  =  20  

           multiply 2 * 2  =  4

   

  add all the values 

  100 + 20 + 20 + 4  =  100 + 40 + 4

                                       =  100  + 44

                                       =  144  

   

   12 * 12  =  144
